Sooo I saw Inception for the first time last night. (I was, in fact, the last person in North America to see it, thank you for asking.) I'm super curious about the fandom, but it's so huge I don't even know where to start! D: Does anyone have recs? I'd be down to read just about anything.

In other news, I need to start Christmas shopping STAT. Preferably yesterday. Ughhhh. Every year I swear I will get it out of the way early, and every year I end up doing a mad dash to the mall on Christmas Eve. Why so stressful, holiday season?

Some stuff I've been enjoying lately:
- insmallpackages. If you haven't checked this out, you definitely should! The wish-making portion is over, but anyone can browse the posted wishes and fill them. Multiple people can fill the same wish, so it's pretty easy to find something that catches your eye, and you can go back and fill more throughout the month. I didn't participate in the wishing, but I love having the chance to brighten someone's day with a little fannish gift. There are a lot of random, smaller fandoms and pairings scattered through there, too. (Someone requested a Veronica Mars/Deputy Leo ficlet! Be still my heart!)

- This love meme! I'm still finding new threads and leaving comments for people. I'm not the most communicative person in fandom, so it's nice to have the opportunity to let people know how much I appreciate them.

- Making Google Translator Beat-Box. (Hit "listen".) This can be filed under "people having way too much time on their hands", but ahahaha, it's pretty amazing.

- verymarykate.com. IDEK how I only just discovered this, but I watched all of them last night and lollerskated all over the place.

- Fake Criterions, a tumblr devoted to making fake Criterion Collection covers for movies that will never, ever be part of the Criterion Collection. I think my favorite is The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, but The Adventures of Pluto Nash is definitely a home-run.

I keep meaning to make an actual post, and for some reason I never get around to doing it. I actually have a whole folder of half-written ones that I abandoned as soon as I saw a shiny object. Whyyyy is it so hard to get back into posting regularly once you get out of the habit?

Not that I have a lot of awesome stuff to post about. Life has been pretty... slkhgsdbg lately. It's not particularly bad, just a lot of random stressful crap I don't want to deal with. I've been gearing up for a big move because I'm transferring to a new college, and that is pretty stressful in and of itself, but yesterday I found out that my financial aid package is ALLLLLLL KINDS of messed up. They are basically flipping a quarter in my direction and telling me to not spend it all in one place SO. Now I don't even know if I'm going to move, because I might not be able to start classes when I get there. Awesome! I have been through so many insane ups and downs in regards to my life plans that I'm not even really freaking out about this one, it's just pretty annoying to slam the brakes at this late date. Especially since it's the holiday season! >:[ Come on, universe.

I have a tendency to want to make things and organize things when my personal life is hectic, so I've been playing around on Tumblr a lot lately. I don't think I've ever mentioned that I have one, but it's here. Let me know if you have one, too! At this point I'm mostly just following people whose graphics I've stumbled across and liked. I basically just use mine as a place to toss picspams and whatnot... I am way too comfortable with LJ to use anything else full-time, but it's a fun side-note kind of thing.

In addition to photoshopping, I've been watching a lot of TV lately. (Sweet, sweet escapism.) I haven't had anything to marathon in long time, but valiant convinced me to start watching Dark Angel the other day and I am loving it. I pretty much started watching it because I knew Jensen Ackles would show up at some point, but after a few episodes I was so hooked that his involvement just seems like an added bonus. It gives me major Firefly vibes -- I think it's the combination of a spunky ensemble cast and a cyberpunk-y "seedy underworld in a digital age" universe. I'm also a sucker for workplace comedy juxtaposed with serious business covert ops (ala Chuck, which would be nothing without the Buy More crew). Anyway, it's been nice to have something new to mentally chew on/wallow around in! I will probably do a more detailed post with my thoughts once I finish the series.

Happy early Thanksgiving, by the way! I cannot even believe it's already here again. Where did 2010 go?

Title: Revisionist History
Author: nutkin
Pairing: Sam/Dean
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 8,052
Summary: Sam and Dean talk about the past.

Notes: This takes place at some point after 6x08, so there are general spoilers for all aired episodes! Being S6 fic, it's kind of dark, but it's also just kind of an ode to how much Dean loves Sam. Much thanks to valiant for giving this a once-over and figuring out what to do with the ending!

Title: Two Atheists in a Foxhole
Author: nutkin
Rating: NC-17
Pairing: Dean/Castiel
Word Count: 8,640
Summary: Dean and Castiel discuss whiskey, cheeseburgers and sex, and find some humanity along the way.

Notes: This is set in some kind of blurry area between "Dark Side of the Moon" and "99 Problems". It was originally supposed to take place after the latter, but I realized at the last minute that the timeline didn't add up. Basically I just wanted to write about Castiel's brief stint with alcoholism. Thanks to valiant for the beta!

I haven't posted a real entry in a long time, which is weird, because I've been more fannish in the last few months than I have been in aaaages. I have blown entire afternoons reading epic RPS AUs loosely based on Regency romance novels, which really says it all.

Unfortunately I've been going through the experience of falling back in love with an old fandom rather than diving into a new one, and it's been so long for me that everything is... very different. It's kind of like moving back to your hometown and being like, "WHAT, they tore that place down? Did we really need another strip mall? Oh, but that's nice, they finally got a Nordstrom's." IDK, I have been stumbling around and trying to get my bearings, but it's harder than I would have thought. The beginning of a season always seems to be a strange transitional time for a TV fandom, because a lot of people drift away and a lot of new people get interested, so I'm just kind of sloshing around on the high seas and trying to find people to talk to and stuff to read. Also trying to not cry when people I like say they're leaving for good. LIFE IS HARD.

FIC: The World Beyond Your Kin (Joe/Nick)
S & H.
nutkin
Title: The World Beyond Your Kin
Pairing: Joe/Nick
Rating: R/NC-17
Word Count: 15,300
Summary: Nick always knew they'd have to grow up eventually, he just didn't think they would grow apart.

Notes:

This is my ludicrously, unforgivably late help_haiti fic. Yes, Haiti; this story is about eight months overdue. It's dedicated entirely to tellcincinnati, who I cannot thank enough for her very generous donation to that cause, and also for her incredible patience when my RL got crazy intense and I lost my JoBros mojo. (...say that three times fast.) It's all for you, Lauren! ♥ I hope this at least puts a smile on your face, even though it was a looooong time coming. Also, my word count here accidentally drifted into JB Big Bang territory. What I lack in punctuality, I make up for in brevity fail?

The prompt for this story was: Joe and Nick growing up and apart and how that affects their relationship/dynamic. Especially with Nick going solo and Joe moving out and all of the outside changes on them, I think there could be a lot of difficult, angsty FEELINGS going on there. I'd just love to get into their heads about that and see what they're maybe not saying to each other. (But can show each other through kisses?)

Nick gets a little stir-crazy when he stays in one place too long.Collapse )
